I received the latest issue of Bicycling in my stocking, so I’ve been reading up on that as time permits.

Here’s an interesting idea to ponder. Just one day of bike commuting per week could save you $609, and burn an extra 1,315 calories.

With gasoline prices averaging $2.60 a gallon, there’s no doubt that many of those new bikes were purchased not for conquering the Sunday-morning hammerfest, but for transportation. By using a bike instead of a car just one day a week, the average American (who drives 29 miles daily) would save $609 in gasoline, maintenance and depreciation costs per year, reduce auto emissions by 24 pounds per week, and, on that ride, even at a comfortable 12-mph pace, burn an extra 1,315 calories. Plus, for commuters, sitting in the saddle instead of in traffic means you’ll arrive at your desk less stressed. So what are you waiting for?
