Happy new year everyone.

It’s that time again for a few statistical numbers.

I’d like to talk a bit about the miles. This is by far the most I’ve ever rode in a year. 4,710 actually. I did this over approximately 294 hours.

Breaking this down a bit, gives you the following:

  • 16.02mph avg
  • 12.90 miles/day
  • 5.65 hrs/week riding

I started (and finished) a book over the holidays called Lance Armstrong’s War, which takes a look at the inside of professional cycling.

If you’re at all into cycling, or curious how it is from a perspective other than the Armstrong books (It’s not about the bike, Every second counts) this is a must read. It isn’t that I don’t like Lance’s books, it’s just nice to get a different perspective.

Anyway, there are a few references to the kind of miles that a professional cyclist puts in and it seems that around 500 miles per week is what is done.

So let’s talk about that.

500/wk works out to 26,000/yr. and 71.42/day. Let’s recall that I’m averaging 12.90/day.

Now I don’t have any grand scheme to pursue 500/wk. I’m just considering it the upper plateau of what the pro’s do.

I always talk about this mythical 5,000 mile year that I’ve been working up to nicely, but just can’t quite seem to hit.

It looks like I’ll be on track to definitely hit it this year for sure, but I’ve got another sort of fun goal to shoot for.

I noticed that I put about 7,000 miles on the Jeep in 2005. This is our secondary car, which I mainly use for commuting, driving to the bus stop, and random errands and trips as needed.

I’d like to shoot for biking more miles than Jeep driving miles.

This will be beneficial in even furthur limiting the car usage *and* help push me to more time on the bike.

As a tangent that would be an interesting resolution. To reduce your car mileage by 20%.

I’ll sign off with the stats that will entertain me 40 years from now.

Happy 2006.
